4. What to buy
16×25×1: MERV 11 is the usual 1-inch everyday pick
In a 1-inch rack, MERV 11 is the step most houses can take without turning the filter into the most restrictive fitting on the return. You still need a rigid frame, the correct actual size (not just the 16×25 nominal), and a change interval that matches pets and runtime.
MERV 11 is not a free upgrade if the slot is undersized or the filter is left in for a season.

Depth beats a printed MERV
Four inches of MERV 13 usually flows more like a thin MERV 8–11 than like a 1-inch MERV 13, because there is more media and lower velocity. See 1-inch vs 4-inch.
Measure the rack
A “16×25×1” is a nominal. The cardboard is usually closer to 15½ × 24½ × ¾. Use the size and depth chart before you order a six-pack.
